“Useless” research still gets funded…

The worst part of being a university researcher is scrabbling for research funding, and this year I found the process particularly stressful, given the current anti-ecology climate in Canada.  Last night I learned that my NSERC grant was renewed – yay.  It’s certainly a relief to know that the lab will survive for another five years, although our funding level will be a bit lower than previously. Should I be grateful that my government is still providing funds for research that I cannot translate into business opportunities?  Or should I be irritated that we must carry on doing more with less?   Or should I just accept, as a vice president assured me this morning, that in the current climate, Survival = Success?  I guess I’ll go with that – it’s better to be optimistic.
